“I know this wasn’t an easy vote for a lot of people, but it was the right vote [..] Tonight’s vote is not a victory for any one party…It’s a victory for the American people, and it’s a victory for common sense” Barack Obama
“After a year of debate and hearing the calls of millions of Americans, we have come to this historic moment. Today we have the opportunity to complete the great unfinished business of our society and pass health insurance reform for all Americans that is a right and not a privilege” Nancy Pelosi
“This is the Civil Rights Act of the 21st century” Dem. James E. Clyburn
“The issue and the legislation itself are probably the biggest thing to become law in 50 years. To put it in the context of here and now: For all the people who wondered if the president’s tough enough, I think it’s safe to say I don’t know another leader who wouldn’t have cut a deal or cut and run from the issue months ago” Senior White House Official
“The relationship [between Obama and House Democrats] has warmed considerably and members feel really good about his putting his whole HEART into the effort over the last few weeks. But it has to be sustained” Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz
“The American people are angry. This body moves forward against their will. Shame on us.” Rep. John A. Boehner
“In the short term Obama will get a boost, because the narrative is that he came back from the dead and got done what no president has managed to do in 70 years. But once people discover that their Medicare taxes are going up, that there are deeper cuts in Medicare Advantage, that there are court challenges to many provisions, and that the process of getting it passed created a portrait of corruption, it won’t sit well.” Peter Wehner
“Ultimately this will help Democrats, but I’m not sure it helps them in 2010” Jim Kessler
“They [Organizing for America] drove over 400,000 calls from real constituents to wavering members of Congress this week alone. They kept us in the game” Democratic Party official
